CHAPTER SEVEN
WAS IT A DREAM?
When Mandie and Joe arrived at his house, he led the way around to the back. “I want to look and see if Samantha is in the barn, and I should also put my rifle up,” he said. “And since you have Snowball, I’ll just meet you inside in a few minutes.”
“All right,” Mandie agreed. “I’ll put Snowball in my room and see where your mother is.”
When Mandie came in through the back door of the house, she found Mrs. Woodard sitting by a lamp at one end of the kitchen. She was embroidering the pillowcases. She looked up at Mandie and said, “Oh, thank goodness you caught that cat.”
“He was locked inside the schoolhouse, and it just happened that Mr. Tallant was taking Miss Abigail home and passed us, so we got him to unlock the door,” Mandie tried to explain as she set the cat down at a bowl of water set out for him near the iron cookstove. She sat down in a chair nearby.
Mrs. Woodard quickly looked up. “Mr. Tallant was taking Miss Abigail home?” she asked.
“Yes, ma’am,” Mandie replied with a smile. “You see, they had just passed us on the road. They were in his cart.”
“My, my!” Mrs. Woodard said with a big smile. “I wonder if something is going on between the two of them.”
“We went down to Miss Abigail’s house to get him, and they were sitting on the front porch in the dark behind the rose trellis,” Mandie explained, still smiling.
“You don’t say!” Mrs. Woodard exclaimed. “And did he go back to Miss Abigail’s house after he let y’all into the schoolhouse?”
“Yes, ma’am. He said he had to go back and get his cart,” Mandie told her.
Joe came into the kitchen and overheard the last remark. He looked impatiently from her to his mother.
“Miss Abigail must be coming out of her shell after all these years mourning over her dead sweetheart,” Mrs. Woodard said with a little laugh.
“Mama!” Joe exclaimed. “You’re not joining in this romance business with Mandie, are you?”
Mrs. Woodard looked at him and laughed. “You men are all just alike. You never understand how important a little romance is to a woman.”
Joe shrugged and changed the subject. “Dad’s horse and buggy aren’t in the barn. Isn’t he back yet?” he asked.
“No, he hasn’t returned yet,” Mrs. Woodard said. “You know it’s a long way over there to the Guytons’. Not only that, the road is rough, so I’ll look for him when I see him. And you haven’t found Samantha, have you?”
“No, ma’am,” Joe replied. “But at least Mandie found Snowball.” He sat down near them.
“I’m glad, because I was afraid he was going to be lost for good and Amanda would think I let him out,” Mrs. Woodard said.
Mandie quickly looked at her and asked, “How did he get out of my room?”
“This is hard to believe,” Mrs. Woodard said. “I was out in the yard beneath the window to your room, dear, and I heard a loud meow.
